On Nov. 5, 슬롯토토 Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Yong Hyun Park) hosted the 슬롯토토 Yonkang Research Awards for Surgical Medicine 2016 at The-K Hotel Seoul, Yangjae-dong, Seoul. The winners of this year’s awards were Han-Kwang Yang, chief professor of the Department of Surgery & Cancer Research Institute at Seoul National University Hospital; and Jong Man Kim, professor of the Department of Surgery at Samsung Medical Center, who received plaques and prizes worth 20 million won (about $17,000) and 10 million won, respectively. Professor Han-Kwang Yang was recognized for his research paper on, “A randomized controlled trial comparing gastrectomy plus chemotherapy with chemotherapy alone in advanced gastric cancer with a single non-curable factor,” which demonstrated that stage 4 cancer patients going through metastasis who undergo a gastrectomy (removal of part or all of the stomach) have low survival rates and that chemotherapy should be the standard treatment. Professor Jong Man Kim was recognized for his research paper on “Outcomes for patients with HCV (hepatitis C virus) after liver transplantation in Korea: a multicenter study.” He conducted a survey of HCV RNA-positive patients who underwent liver transplants and investigated the prognostic factors for patient survival and the effects of immunosuppression. The 슬롯토토 Yonkang Research Awards for Surgical Medicine were established in 2007 to help develop surgical medicine in Korea and encourage researchers.
