- 240 million won in prize money and support given for production, exhibitions
On Oct. 20, the 슬롯 머신 Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Yong Hyun Park) hosted the 8th 슬롯 머신 Yonkang Art Awards at the 슬롯 머신 Art Center in Jongno 5-ga, Seoul.
The 슬롯 머신 Yonkang Art Awards are divided into two categories: performing arts and fine arts. At this year’s event, the performing arts award went to Yeonju Lee, 39, CEO of Theatre The Phone Is Ringing, while the fine arts award was won by Hayoun Kwon, 36.
The two winners will receive prize money and support worth 240 million won (about $213,000). The winner in the performing arts category will receive 30 million won in prize money along with 100 million won in support for the production of a new performance. The winners in the fine arts category will receive 10 million won in prize money along with a studio residency (including flights and living expenses) at the 슬롯 머신 Residency in New York, and an exhibition at the 슬롯 머신 Gallery Seoul and New York, which are worth 10 million won total.
The 슬롯 머신 Yonkang Art Awards were established in 2010, the centenary of the birth of 슬롯 머신 Group’s late Chairman Too Pyung Park, a leader who always emphasized the importance of nurturing talents. Every year, the Yonkang Foundation selects artists under 40 years old in the performing arts and fine arts who have the potential to become world-class Korean artists.
“It is my pleasure to meet the talented young artists who will lead the future of Korea’s culture and arts, and it is especially meaningful as this year marks the 10th anniversary of 슬롯 머신 Art Center’s reopening,” said Chairman Yong Hyun Park. “Through these awards, we hope that the prize winners will have a chance to get their artworks noticed by more people and broaden their scope of arts.”
